Week 4

Week Four Recap: This week Caroline and I watched the last two films in phase three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Ant-Man and the Wasp and Avengers Endgame , and we watched the two television series in phase four Wanda Vision and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.  https://insidethemagic.net/2021/03/wandavision-monica-rambeau-al1mmb/ Overall throughout all the phases of the MCU representation of women as well as people of color has improved. In the series Wanda Vision, we see our first black female superhero, Monica Rambeau, outside of the black panther films and does not play into the stereotypical best friend trope. Falcon and Winter soldier did a great job with representation of people of color as well as addressing difficult themes. Overall this series had a strong social impact as Sam Wilson, a black man takes the role of being Captain America. It’s important to note that the previous Captain America was a white man with blonde hair and blue eyes. During the show, ...

Week 3: This week Caroline and I watched almost all the films of phase three in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We did not watch all the movies in phase three as there are so many, however we will watch the rest of next week with the two short television series in phase 4. In all the films we watched, Dr. Strange, Thor Ragnarok and black Panther were the most interesting to discuss.  The first thing to note about the film Dr. Strange is that the character was portrayed by a white actor even though the character in the comics is of Asian descent. This is not the first time we have seen marvel white wash certain characters. Like I mentioned in my blog last week both Wanda and Pietro Maximoff were originally people of color, but were portrayed by white actors in the films. There were also many instances in this film where Marvel could have shown more diversity by having more Asian actors as the film focused on cultural and spiritual aspects of Asian culture. Like in the previous...

Week 2: This week Caroline and I watched all the films in phase two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after previously watching Phase one of Marvel last week. Some of the movies that are in phase 2 of Marvel are Iron Man 3, Avengers age of Ultron, Captain America the Winter Soldier, and Guardians of the galaxy. The three goals we set in group one were to 1) Observe how the world at the time (cultural movements) affect the films, 2) Observe how the films affect the world around them, 3) Observe the total change in representation throughout the arc of creation within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We decided to watch all of the movies in phase 2 while keeping these goals in mind.   (https://www.scpr.org/blogs/newmedia/2013/05/07/13562/why-comic-book-fans-hate-the-mandarin-in-iron-man/ ) While Watching Iron 3 we noticed like in the previous movies that there was a lack of good representation of women and people of color. This movie also did not pass the Bechdel test. There are har...

Week 1

Hello, my name is Justin Edwards and I am working with Caroline Hyde on our senior project investigating the cultural impacts and representation of race and gender in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  We chose this project as we both enjoy and are fascinated by films and television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We also noticed that marvel has not always been the best with representation of people of color and women and we think it would be interesting to see how representation has evolved in the films and to discuss and write about it. Not to mention we both also took Tony, our mentors, Fighting the Power: African-American Film class, and thought that this project would allow us to expand on some of the aspects that we learned in that class. Marvel has four phases with movies and tv shows. Each week we will be watching one phase worth of movies. This week we watched phase one which consisted of: Iron man, Iron man 2, Captain America the first avenger, Incredible Hulk, and ...
